Traditions

I have many traditions from my childhood that I will be passing onto my kids but I would also like to start some new ones! I would love to hear some of your family traditions for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas...that is if you're willing to let me steal them :-)

One of my Christmas traditions from when I was little that I am passing down to my boys is an advent calendar. I make them each a calendar out of red foam board and on each square starting on 12/1I glue a little present, like candy or a small trinket. So this helps them count down the days til Christmas. I loved this when I was growing up and this will be my first year to do it with my boys.

Also every year my mother in-law, me and her sister and neice get together about 3 weeks before Christmas and have "Cookie Day" We start early in the morning and bake all day! We probably bake about 12 different kinds. The boys help.

I've adopted my hubby's Louisiana roots. We celebrate Papa Noel instead of Santa. We have a huge Cajun feast for Christmas dinner. And play New Orleans jazz, Zydeco Christmas music all month long. I make my hubby read, "A Cajun's Night Before Christmas" every Christmas Eve. We use to have a party and light bond fires on the bayou (back in Lousiana) so Papa Noel could see while delivering packages in the swamp. Instead of a sleigh and reindeer he has a pirot (pronounced pier-o) it's a wooden canoe, pulled by alligators. Papa Noel always leaves us a stocking of cajun treats (chocolate alligators, pralines, and gator jerky) and a personalized Christmas letter written in cajun by Papa Noel himself. They are hilarious!

I also make sugar cookies shaped like alligators for Christmas. I'll be sure to post them on my blog this year. Our kids will be the weird ones that pass out alligator cookies at school, LOL!

To answer your question, my hubby is a RN. He's been a trauma nurse (ER) for over 12 yrs... He went back to school (MBA) and got into hospital development. We moved down from Austin for a position in Houston. He got laid off in August due to the economy. We've been in Houston for about 8 months. Hubby is pulling shifts in ER/OR and picking up consulting work.

And yes! We would like to try for a baby soon. Very soon!!!

I'm catching up on my reading, and I thought this post was a good idea! I don't really know what traditions we will develop yet, although I did buy Christmas pajamas for the girls, thinking that might somehow become a tradition. I've heard of some families who let the kids open new pajamas on Christmas Eve, to sleep in for Christmas morning.

Either way, it's going to be fun developing our own traditions with our new family members! : )
